What the Huangli actually is
The Huangli (黄历), often called the “Imperial Calendar” or “almanac,” is a system developed over two millennia in China to track time and suggest its natural rhythms. We present it for a Western audience without diluting it — and without treating it as fate.
A mindful lens, not a leash
Ancient timing tools were never meant to “tie a person down.” They are a psychological mirror and a strategic timing tool — a way to notice energy, plan with intention, and act with awareness. The foundational idea we centre is 人定胜天 (“human effort overcomes all”): your agency, hard work, and free will always override superstition. Where the almanac cautions, we invite mindfulness — never paralysis.
The lunar calendar & Heavenly Stems
Each day carries a Gan-Zhi (干支) label — a pair from the sexagenary cycle of 10 Heavenly Stems (天干) and 12 Earthly Branches (地支), e.g. 甲子. The stem gives the day its Five Element (五行): 甲乙 Wood, 丙丁 Fire, 戊己 Earth, 庚辛 Metal, 壬癸 Water. We pair that with the day's Na Yin (纳音), the elemental “sound” of the pairing, to describe the day's energetic flavour.
The Twelve Day Officers (建除十二神)
The most practical lens in the almanac. Each day is governed by one of twelve officers, cycling in a fixed order. They describe the day's temperament — whether it favours beginning, clearing, stabilising, or resting.
- 建
Establish · Jiàn
A day to begin. Momentum favours initiation and fresh starts.
Strong for launching projects, beginning work, and setting intentions. Less ideal for closing, settling, or retreating.
- 除
Remove · Chú
A day to clear. Letting go and tidying create space.
Good for cleaning, ending old patterns, medical care, and clearing obstacles. Not a day to accumulate or commit long-term.
- 满
Full · Mǎn
A day of abundance. What is ripe comes to fullness.
Favours harvest, celebration, and completion of what already exists. Avoid forcing brand-new heavy beginnings.
- 平
Balance · Píng
A calm, levelling day. Good for steadying and smoothing.
Excellent for mediation, repairs, reconciliation, and even-handed work. A neutral, low-drama energy.
- 定
Settle · Dìng
A day to fix and commit. Plans gain footing.
Good for decisions, contracts, focus, and locking in arrangements. A stable, concentrating energy.
- 执
Grasp · Zhí
A day of persistence and execution. Hold the line.
Favours disciplined execution, capturing opportunities, and following through. Less suited to open-ended exploration.
- 破
Break · Pò
A day to release and dismantle. Constructive destruction.
Good for letting go, ending, and clearing what no longer serves. Avoid major launches or irreversible commitments.
- 危
Precaution · Wēi
A day for care. Heights and risks ask for caution.
Move deliberately. Good for careful, small, precise tasks; postpone big gambles and exposed commitments.
- 成
Complete · Chéng
A day of achievement. What you finish, succeeds.
Excellent for completing, sealing deals, marrying, and reaching goals. A high-success energy.
- 收
Collect · Shōu
A day to gather and store. Receive and consolidate.
Good for acquiring, saving, harvesting, and wrapping up loose ends. Less ideal for giving away or starting afresh.
- 开
Open · Kāi
A day of opening. Doors and opportunities invite action.
Favours openings, launches, first meetings, and new ventures. A bright, opportunistic energy.
- 闭
Close · Bì
A day to rest and seal. Withdraw and replenish.
Good for resting, planning, and sealing what is done. Not a day for bold launches or public exposure.
Yi (宜) & Ji (忌)
The almanac lists activities the day supports (宜, “favorable”) and those it suggests approaching with care (忌, “avoid”). These are drawn from the day's officer, its value-spirit (值神), and elemental relationships. We translate each term into plain English so you can appreciate the logic without needing a background in Eastern astrology.
The twelve 时辰 (hours)
The traditional day is split into twelve double-hours, each named for an Earthly Branch (子时 23:00–01:00, and so on). Each window is governed by a “yellow” (黄道, auspicious) or “black” (黑道, inauspicious) deity. The green windows in your daily timeline are naturally aligned for focus and action — but remember, any hour is a good hour when you show up prepared.
