Hexagram 11 of 64
泰 tài
Peace · Flow
坤 (kūn, Earth) above · 乾 (qián, Heaven) below
The Judgment
Heaven and earth communicate; the small departs and the great arrives. This is genuine flow between opposites — use it while it lasts, and share the surplus.
The Image 大象
Heaven and earth unite: peace. The wise person takes from where there is too much and gives to where there is too little.
The six lines
Each line of 泰 has its own classical text. If a line in your cast is changing, its text is the heart of your reading.
Line 1 · 初九
Pulling the grass and its connected roots together. Advance as one — good fortune.
Line 2 · 九二
Embrace the rough as well as the smooth; cross rivers without a boat; forget no one far away. Even lose your cronies — walk the middle way.
Line 3 · 九三
No plain without a slope, no going without a return. Expect the dip; hold through it — no blame.
Line 4 · 六四
Light-hearted, not guarding wealth, neighbors drawn close by trust alone. The easy flow is the point.
Line 5 · 六五
The emperor gives his daughter in marriage — humility even from the mighty. Supreme good fortune.
Line 6 · 上六
The wall collapses back into its moat. Do not fight the decline; speak truth to your own people instead.
If you drew this in a reading
A favorable pattern. Among the sixty-four patterns, this one belongs to the favorable family: its core movement supports what you would do with it. Favorable does not mean automatic — the hexagram still asks you to hold up your end with steadiness and good faith.
In yes/no questions this hexagram leans yes — the pattern supports proceeding.
The trigrams give the flavor: 坤 (Earth) above — receptive devotion — nourishment, patience, carrying others — over 乾 (Heaven) below — creative force — initiative, clarity, persistence. Where those two energies meet, 泰 is born.
